About the Roma (Gypsies) -
The Gypsy people originated in India around 1000 A.D. It is believed that they either left or were forced to leave India because of how low they were on the Indian caste system. While they wandered and searched for a place of acceptance, they continued to be the outcasts of society. This caused them to continue migrating until they were dispersed all over the world.
The estimated population of the Gypsy people worldwide is 40 million. In many of the countries in which they dwell, the Gypsy people are still very mistreated and disliked. In many eastern European countries, most businesses will not employ the Gypsy people, so they are left to steal or beg for their survival. However in some countries, such as the United States, the Gypsies have overcome their low state.
They often work as roofers, black top pavers, carnival workers and fortune tellers.
The Gypsy people have their own language. It is a universal language that originated while the Gypsies traveled through many different countries. The Gypsy people also have their own culture. For example, many Gypsy marriages are arranged by the parents of the couple. They also have their own cultural laws and court system. There is much more to know about the Gypsy people and their culture. l would love the opportunity to share with you our burden for my people, the Gypsies.
